The Density of Intimacy

2025

Digital photograph

In Egypt, I kept finding chairs on roads and in alleys—living rooms leaking into the street. These chairs softened the boundary between public and private: an open invitation to sit, yet also a gentle demand to adopt the site’s own rhythms of intimacy. In a culture where family is central, that warmth revived painful memories of conflict within my own family. The chair became a double sign—of belonging and of its lack. This work looks at how another’s closeness outlines my own absence, using an everyday object to trace the social density inscribed in space.
